In the heart of Lagos, Nigeria, lies a beautiful oasis that stands as a testament to the power of restoration – Freedom Park. This historic site was once a symbol of confinement and oppression back in the days. I remember vividly my very first visit to Freedom Park, I was interning at a nearby architectural firm. The Nigerian Institute of Architects had thrown a party and had graciously invited the firm where I was an intern, so by extension, I was qualified to attend. I went and experienced the greenery and beautiful aspects of freedom park. I mean, the decorations were tremendous (for those of you who are familiar with Lagos highlife party decorations), and the scenery looked really cool. However, “this park” had more than it meets the eye. My next visit to this masterpiece became a massive eye opener for me. Little did I know that this beautiful outdoor space that I had greatly admired was once a confinement and a dreaded space for so many, hundreds of years ago……
